Self-Care for Overwhelmed Business Owners: How to Stay Healthy and Balanced
Everyone has heard the phrase: You have to rest before you can keep on working hard. You can take it as advice or as an excuse. But the truth is, there are many ways to take care of yourself. Neuro-linguistic programming has even shown that the brain needs downtime to recharge, stay healthy, and be ready for more.
How to Practice Self-Care When You’re Busy with Work & Life
It’s not easy to juggle work and life. In the hustle and bustle of everyday demands, it can feel impossible to take time for yourself. Entrepreneurs are no exception. In fact, the more successful you become as a business owner, the less time you often have for your own well-being.
While this is a good problem to have, it is also a very difficult one to manage.
So, how do you make sure you’re caring for your mind and body while working hard? By taking small but intentional steps to keep yourself grounded. Here are some ways to start:
Take time out of your day to do something you enjoy, even if it’s just reading a book or watching TV.
Make sure you get enough sleep so you can function well during the day.
Check in with yourself by asking: “How am I feeling?” and then take the appropriate steps based on that answer.
What Do Self-Care Practices Look Like?
Self-care practices are essential for everyone—especially entrepreneurs. They improve the quality of your work, make you more productive, and keep you from burning out.
Of course, it’s easier to practice self-care when you have free time, but that’s rarely the case when running a business. That’s why you must protect these habits, even when life gets busy.
One of the most popular self-care practices is meditation. It has been scientifically proven to benefit both brain function and physical health. Meditation helps clear distractions, calm your mind, and make you feel more grounded.
Honestly, I never thought about yoga or meditation until one of my clients wanted to launch a course that included meditations as an irresistible offer. When I tried it, it was the most calming, serene experience. If you’ve never tried meditation before, I encourage you to start today.
But it doesn’t have to be meditation. Self-care is anything that allows you to pause, recharge, and be present.
For me, walking my son’s puppy three times a day has become one of my favorite practices. It forces me to step away from the computer, gives me daily exercise, and lets me enjoy 20 minutes of a podcast or jam out to my favorite gospel music.
Self-care looks different for everyone. The key is consistency. Don’t give up on your practices just because you’re busy.
Three Common Self-Care Practices for Entrepreneurs
Even with a full schedule, many entrepreneurs make space for these simple but powerful practices:
Reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption
Going to bed earlier to prioritize rest
Staying active through regular exercise
The best thing you can do as an entrepreneur is take care of yourself. When you’re healthy—mentally, physically, and spiritually—you’re more prepared to serve others and build the business you’ve been called to lead.
Conclusion
As an entrepreneur, you are always on the go. That’s exactly why you need to pause and care for yourself. Self-care is not a luxury—it’s an investment in your health, your family, and your business.
